STUDENT TEACH ABROAD, LIMA, PERU (Pending)
In the Spring of 2016, I hope to spend four weeks teaching in Lima, Peru. I will be teaching English to students at Colegio María Auxiliadora, an all girls Catholic School. From this experience I hope to gain pedagogical knowledge from working with Spanish Speaking students, an increased passion for teaching, a compassion for those in poverty, and personal growth from living in a new culture.
DIVERSITY PRACTICUM AT DOROTHY MOSES ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, BISMARCK
I had the privilege to gain experience in a Title I school in Mrs. Beth Urlacher's fourth grade classroom and Mrs. Amber Schaefer's lunch time intervention program. The classroom I participated in consisted of twenty-seven students with academically, behaviorally, and socially diverse needs. During this experience, I worked in one-on-one or small group settings scaffolding students who were behind with in class work. At lunch time, I worked with Mrs. Schaefer scaffolding students in classwork, promoting appropriate behavior, and developing relationships with students. Dorothy Moses changed my perspective of teaching. This opportunity helped me to recognize that students do not need me to teach them content only, but to provide them opportunities to be successful and grow into the people they are meant to be.
STUDY ABROAD, ROME, ITALY
In the Spring of 2014, I spent a semester studying at the University of Mary in Rome, Italy. In addition to phenomenal academic courses about Rome, St. Benedict, and Art, I learned how to travel, how to live in community, and who I am. The study abroad program revealed to me that learning will never stop because of how large our world truly is. My passion and interest of other cultures grew as I lived abroad, and I cannot wait to bring that excitement into my classroom.
MISSION TRIP TO PORTSMOUTH, DOMINICA
In May 2012, I first encountered education as a profession. In Dominica, a very poor country, I assisted classroom teachers, taught French and English, and interacted with students from Kindergarten to Fifth Grade. As I interacted with these exuberant students for two weeks, I recognized my love for kids in a new way. It was in Dominica that I began to see how life changing a teacher could be and how much children needed someone to love them indefinitely.
